Morning Workout Advice from an Edmonton Personal Trainer

This is just some friendly advice for those thinking they want to become first thing in the morning exercisers: It’s really hard to stick to. You’ve got to absolutely love it.
I remember the old college days walking home from parties, crushing a last road beer at 6 in the morning, and inevitably crossing paths with the people out for their morning runs. A true yin and yang representation of the health spectrum. The people running at 6 in the morning day after day fucking love running. It’s not just because they need to start exercising and lose weight. They’re obsessed. And that generally holds true for most people who come to the gym at 6 on their own.
So let me paint a picture:
Sunday, you stay up until 10 watching a movie, fully under the motive that you will be waking up early Monday morning to go hit the gym.
5 AM, the alarm goes off. It’s -27 degrees outside, and you can hear the wind howling. Your bed will never, ever feel as comfortable as it does in that moment. The urge to go back to sleep will be stronger than you’ve ever felt. You probably wouldn’t even get out of bed in this situation for something that you actually wanted to do. Now imagine trying that for an exercise session that you don’t even like. That’s the adversity you’ll face every single morning you schedule a 6 AM workout. And you’ll lose a
lot of those battles. Don’t set yourself up for failure before you even get started.
Be realistic. Schedule a time for exercise that you’re at very least already awake for. Or if you want to go super early, hire a trainer and then your money is on the line every morning (Not me though fuck that).
